Chopper's Page Chopper with Jeremy and Anthony when Chopper was about eight months old and 110 pounds Frequently Asked Questions About This Dog Is he good with kids? See for yourself. Shiloh Shepherds are generally excellent with kids. They are bred specifically to have a milder temperament than most German Shepherd lines. When Chopper was just six months old (and about seventy pounds) he would allow my two year old grandson to lead him around by the collar. He will happily allow himself to be led around by any child old enough to walk. If a two-year-old pushes on him, he will fall to the ground and allow the baby to crawl all over him. We have used Chopper to teach small kids who are afraid of dogs not to be afraid. We just have them over for the weekend and by Sunday night, they are laying all over Chopper like he is a big teddy bear. Shiloh Shepherds generally have milder temperaments than regular German Shepherds and, therefore, are excellent choices for a family dog. That is, as long as you don't mind a family dog that may weigh as much as an average man. Happily, even though they may be as big as the average man, they are a lot easier to get along with than the average man. However, we have had a couple of incidents where strange kids
have poked him in the eye,
so I have to be careful about kids we don’t know. His paws are also quite big
and heavy, and he carries a lot of weight, whatever he is doing, so we have to be careful about that. |
