Mike's Favorite Motorcycle Rides

15th Annual British Ride
Contemplating the ride

I was looking in Rider magazine one day at the clubs and rallies section and read a notice about a British ride involving in addition to vintage motorcycles, a "Teardrop Trailer" showing also. These are simply camping trailers able to sleep two adults comfortably and containing your perishable food in a actual ice-box, along with other food stuff and room for pots & pans, and gas stove too. They were available by small independent manufactures to buy already built or in kit form for you to assemble at home. Most were built in southern California but some in the midwest also and shaped like teardrops from the side.  They were built before WW2 in the 1920's and after the war when people started to explore America, especially after major highways were built across the states.

So after looking at this article more, I thought I should go for it and see how many British bikes will turn up with sidecars. This seemed like a unique bunch of riders and enthusiasts that would be fun to meet. You won't see any chopper motorcycles here. There is a southern California "Teardrop" club these days that has annual rallies and there is a manufacturer making them for motorcycles(check out Songdog Ranch ride coming soon) and they look real special. They can sleep at least one person and carry alot of stuff too. Wellll..., the next day I got my vintage 1974 Norton 850 Commando Interstate ready for the trip and started on the morning of May 23, 2003..The ride I figured was around 270 miles round trip from Rosamond Ca.(in between Mojave and Lancaster, Ca.), so I topped the 6.25 gal. gas tank and started for Lake Cachuma Ca.
