GET THE WORD ON DRUGS FROM THE INSIDE

A lot of people who use and sell drugs end up in jail.

Visit a local jail and interview the warden to find out how many inmates are there because of drugs. What questions would you ask? We've given you ones to start with, and you can do the rest. Write down your questions in the spaces below.

  1. How many people are in your jail?

  2. What percentage of the people are here because of drug-related crimes?

  3. What drugs did they use or sell and why?

  4. What percentage of the people in your jail were drug sellers?

  5. What actions are people taking to prevent future drug use when they return to the community?

  6.

Then visit a local treatment center, and compare what you found at the jail. What questions would you want to ask the people there? Again, we've given you the questions to start with.
  1. How many people are in your treatment program?

  2. What brings people to treatment in the first place?

  3. What drugs did they use and why?

  4. What percentage of the people in the treatment sold drugs?

  5. What actions are people taking to prevent future drug use when they return to the community?

  6.

Create a skit about what you've learned. Ask your teacher for permission to let your fellow classmates act it out in a role play. Be sure to highlight the similarities and differences in the ways that drug users are treated at the two facilities.
