Section 3

Nature and distribution of known offenses

Data in this section describe the nature and extent of criminal activity in the United States. Three different measures of the level of crime are used: victimization surveys, officially recorded data on offenses known to law enforcement agencies, and self-reports of criminal involvement from nationwide surveys. The sources of these data include the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics' National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS); the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program; the Monitoring the Future Project at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan; the National Youth Survey at the Institute of Behavioral Science, University of Colorado; the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration; PRIDE, Inc.; The Gallup Organization; and others.
