YOU'RE THE REPORTER Take
a trip to your local drug store. Go to the pharmacy department and ask to speak to the
pharmacist on duty. A pharmacist is a person who is trained and licensed by law to prepare
medicines. See if he or she is available to talk to you for a few minutes about
prescription and over-the-counter drugs that are abused and what he or she feels can be
done about the abuse. Prepare for your conversation by listing some of the questions you
may want to ask. Use the space provided on the opposite page to write down your questions.
Now call your local police department and ask to speak with someone on the narcotics squad. Talk with him or her about prescription and over-the- counter drug abuse. Find out what he or she feels can be done about the problem. You don't have to stop there. Who else in your community could you interview? After your talk with the pharmacist, police narcotics officer, and anyone else you might have chosen, put all of the information you've gathered into a report. Write or type up what you learned. Ask your teacher if you can make extra copies and distribute the report to students at your school. I'm sure you can get extra credit for your efforts too! Take my word for it, your teachers, principals and families will be as proud and excited about the project as you will be. |
