        A Flax and Other Bast Plants Symposium will convene in Poznan, Poland from September 30 through October 1, 1997.  The symposium is divided into three programs: non-textile applications, a festival of harvesting and processing machines, and bast fiber plants in recultivation of polluted areas.  Also the FAO European Cooperative Research Network on Flax and other Bast Plants is planning a workshop entitled ‘Bast Fiber Plants Today and Tomorrow’ to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia June 22 through 23, 1998.   For additional information on both events contact Dobroslawa Gucia, Institute of Natural Fibres, Science Information Centre, Poznan, Poland, fax (4861) 417-830,
