THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ________________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release February 9, 1994 AIDS CZAR KRISTINE GEBBIE COMMENDS DRUG CZAR FOR NATIONAL DRUG STRATEGY WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today President Clinton's National AIDS Policy Coordinator Kristine M. Gebbie joined the President, Dr. Lee Brown, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and other cabinet members in support of the 1994 National Drug Control Strategy. "Approximately 30 percent of all AIDS cases in the U.S. are related to injection drug use. Because of this, we have a partnership with those working to stop drug abuse. If you stop drugs, you help stop AIDS. Our commitment to fight substance abuse is part of our national AIDS prevention and education program," Ms Gebbie said. "Prevention and treatment in substance abuse is AIDS prevention. I am delighted to stand beside the President and Dr. Brown in their efforts and I look forward to working with Dr. Brown. This strategy acknowledges the integral relationship between the epidemic of drug and alcohol dependency and the HIV/AIDS epidemic." The Office of National AIDS Policy continues to work closely with the Office of National Drug Control Policy to combat the epidemics of HIV/AIDS and drug dependency. -30-30-30-
