Chemotherapy Drugs
Cancer is a terribly deadly disease that affects millions of Americans each year. Chemotherapy (also known as radiation therapy) can help to treat cancer, however it often causes unwanted side effects that sometimes make conditions worse for the patient. Fortunately, doctors have developed chemotherapy drugs that are especially designed to help cancer patients cope with the treatment. In addition, these drugs can help increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy and its attempt to fight off cancer cells.
There are over 100 different kinds of chemotherapy drugs. Because cancer can take many forms, the doctor must decide which drug will fit the patient’s situation best. In a lot of cases, the doctor may combine several chemotherapy drugs to work in conjunction with each other to slow down or stop cancer cell growth. Not all chemotherapy drugs are in pill form. Many of them are in clear liquid form, and are administered via intravenous needles. This allows them to integrate into the bloodstream more easily, and they can be regulated by the doctor to ensure the patient receives the right dosage at the right time.
A new popular supplemental chemotherapy drug on the market today is called Neulasta. The purpose of Neulasta is to act as an additional treatment to go hand in hand with traditional chemotherapy. Because chemo can cause patients to have a lower white blood cell count, their immune systems can become compromised. Neulasta acts as a proponent for white blood cells, encouraging the blood to make more in order to boost the immune system, and give patients more energy. While chemotherapy drugs are designed to help cancer patients fight the disease, sometimes the side effects can be very difficult. Fortunately, modern medicine is constantly developing new products that can help make cancer patients’ lives much easier and experience less pain.
