Drug Side Effects
Many prescribed medications may pose the risk of drug side
effects ranging from mild discomfort to serious health risks.
It is important to always read the insert provided by the
pharmacy and familiarize yourself with any potential drug
side effects before taking a new medication as well as knowing
the correct course of action to be taken if they occur. Common
drug side effects can be dry mouth, headache, stomachache
and weight loss or gain. Most of these drug side effects
are harmless and temporary. However, some drug side effects
are serious health risks and may cause lasting or long term
damage. It is always important to remain in contact with
your physician and pharmacist if experiencing any drug side
effects from a prescribed or over-the-counter medication.
If experiencing drug side effects which make you unable to continue taking a
certain needed medication, speak to your doctor about an alternative. Today,
manufacturers offer different types of the same medication and if one causes
unpleasant or harmful drug side effects, your doctor may be able to recommend
another. For example, there are dozens of different antibiotics available on
today’s drug market. A common drug side effect of antibiotics is nausea
and vomiting. However, a different type of antibiotic may provide you with the
same benefit without the drug side effects.
Drug side effects from illegal narcotics may cause lasting health issues or even
be life threatening. For example, some common drug side effects form the persistent
use of crystal meth are loss of hair and teeth, sores on the skin and permanent
loss of brain density. Some illegal drugs cause drug side effects which are less
severe and will go way when use of the drug deists. For example, marijuana causes
such drug side effects as confusion, paranoia, dry mouth and hunger. It is important
to weigh the benefits of the medication against the risk of drug side effects
to determine if it is beneficial for your overall well being.
