Atenolol
Millions of Americans suffer from high blood pressure. Left alone without treatment, chronic high blood pressure can lead to serious problems such as heart attacks. If your doctor has found that you are suffering from high blood pressure, he or she will want to take action. One way to control this is by prescribing a medication called Atenolol. Atenolol works to treat high blood pressure and to prevent chest pain (also known as angina). In addition, it can be used as treatment for heart attacks. This works as a beta-blocker, which means the medication has the ability to slow the heart rate and relax the blood pressure.
If you have been diagnosed the high blood pressure, taking a prescription medication may be the only option you have. Generally, Atenolol is given as an oral tablet and is taken once or twice a day depending on the severity of your high blood pressure. If you have already taken your daily dose of your medication, and find your blood pressure is still high, you should never take more. Only take this medication as your doctor prescribes.
It is also important to keep in mind that Atenolol cannot cure your high blood pressure. That is not what it is intended to do. Instead, it works to help you control your blood pressure. Your doctor will probably recommend that you take this prescription medication in addition to adding exercise and changing your diet to a healthier one. Many times, dietary and lifestyle changes can help drastically control high blood pressure.
While this medication is usually well tolerated, there can be some side effects. These side effects may include dizziness, tiredness, upset stomach, diarrhea, depression and nausea. If you cannot control your blood pressure through diet and exercise, speak to your health care provider about taking the prescription medication Atenolol.
