How to Use the Prescription Drug Zocor
Zocor is a prescription drug that can decrease low density lipoprotein (LDL) by as much as 50%. This means that Zocor can help lower your cholesterol, which can prevent heart attack, hardening of the arteries, stroke, or vascular disease. It has been proven to reduce the changes of developing dementia as you get older and also reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease.
As with all medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had any type of allergic reaction to any other drug. Also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, an under active thyroid, kidney disease, or any type of muscle disorder. Zocor should not be used if you are pregnant. It can cause birth defects, so even if you are trying to get pregnant, inform your doctor. Also, tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Zocor should not be given to children younger than the age of 10.
Zocor should be kept at room temperature and away from moisture and heat. If prescribed Zocor, your doctor will probably also suggest a change in your diet and an exercise regime be implemented. You should take Zocor at either bedtime or with your dinner. If you are prescribed several tablets a day, take them with meals. You should also drink a full glass of water when taking your prescription. Your doctor will probably suggest that you come in for regular visits so he or she can do blood work to monitor how well the Zocor is helping your condition.
When taking Zocor for your cholesterol, you should avoid foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. You should also avoid taking alcohol as it can raise your triglyceride levels. Also, avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice as it can interact with Zocor and have potentially dangerous effects. Possible allergic reactions to Zocor are swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, muscle pain, tenderness, weakness followed by fever or flu like symptoms, and dark urine.
